Valentine Party

on Saturday 11th February we had our Valentine party in the Club premises, appropriately festooned by Tommy. Cyril spun the discs, mainly songs and accordeon play of Brendan Shine and super pop group ABBA, so between waltzes, some ceili numbers and group dancing, at the night's height everyone was on the floor – well done, Cyril! Cait baked a lovely tart, new Committee member Mary Phelan and others made savoury sandwiches and contributed cakes and goodies. A glass of wine and contributed cakes and goodies. A glass of wine or orange whetter appetites, and when supper-time came, self-service worked well, with people sitting down to eat and enjoy Tommy's tea, adding a social aspect to the party.

Visit to National Gallery

Int he Gallery theatre we enjoyed a lecture by Sighle Breathnach-Lynch on artist Evie Hone, who specialised in stained glass and modern art; some of her magnificent windows can be seen in Irish churches. We learned Evie introduced modern art in Ireland.

After the lecture we went to the Beit Wing where a collection of Masterpieces was on view. The famous Caravaggio “ The Taking of Christ” was in a central position, with lights to enhance this great work. We viewed a Van Gogh of  “Paris Rooftops”, a Picasso, and there were some Irish portraits and a picture of Powerscourt Waterfall. Most of the great artists of the time were represented in the Wing. So after an enjoyable Sunday afternoon at the Gallery, we headed off to town for some light refreshments, with memories of the wonderful works of art fresh in our minds
