Bus
outing
After the difficult task of Fixing a suitable date for our bus outing, we were fortunate weather-wise. The bus run to Bunclody was without fault, our meal excellent and then we headed back to Huntingdon Castle. Very unprepossessing it looked at first-just a stark castle, acres of green grass, stately trees and here and there a lovely rose to row. But when a young man who actually lives in the castle took charge and brought us on a tour our eyes were opened. His Great-Grandmother ( or Aunt, I'm not sure which) still lives there aged 95! We didn't see her, she was off gallivanting somewhere! The tempLe of Iris, in the basement, brought a touch of the Orient - its reminded most of us back stage in the theatre with all the props thrown higgledy-piggledy everywhere!
Such a change in Altamont- beautiful gardens with plants and flowers galore to tempt our pockets- it was great ending to a most enjoyable tour.
Many thanks to Eileen MUrphy and Cyril Hynes who provided welcome refreshments at the club before then bus trip began. C.C.
Film
- "Brassed off"
The Clubs latest film showed members of s Brass Band threatened by closure if the coal mine in which they work. Amusing sequence contrasted with poignant scene, interspersed with lovely music played by the renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band- " Floral Dance", " Danny Boy", Concierto de Aranjuez ("Orange Juice"!), "Land of Hope and Glory". The only sour note was some gritty language, which added nothing to the excellent acting by Peter Postlethwaite, Ewan McGregor, Stephen Tomkinson and Tara Fitzgerald. Thank you Paddy Kelly, who presided at the projector and to Tommy Ward and Teresa Talbot for the fine supper.
