REVIEW OF RECENT EVENTS

BOOK NIGHT

Our latest ”Book Night” proved to be another very enjoyable and entertaining event. There was a
good attendance, each with an interesting book. Excerpts read covered a wide variety of authors
and subjects. We had some inspiring poems by Helen Steiner Rice, the only writer to feature twice, -
“One Nation under God” from Eileen Murphy and “My Thanks” from Lilian Curtis. Other famous works represented were John Steinbeck‘s “Grapes of Wrath” from Rose Noone, and Frank O’Connor’s “An Only Child” from Dympna Flynn. There were some personal histories – Francis Lawlor’s own works, “Mother’s Remedies” and an essay on “Dublin l9l3”, and Teresa O’Hehir’s account of “An O’Hehir Family Reunion”. Lorraine Wall gave us Facts about Playing Cards,
as did Mairead Mahon about film star and Fitness Guru Jane Fonda, while Patsy Collins had a medical theme, “Back Pain” by Professor Malcolm Jayson. Teresa Talbot amused us with John D. Sheridan’s “Just A Cup in the Hand” about Ireland’s favourite beverage. Paddy Kelly treated us to a spoken version of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Nothing Rhymed”, and also proved an able MC for the night.
Niall Brooks read a most impressive extract from Sr Briege McKenna’s amazing “Miracles Do Happen”. We thank all who came and contributed their selection, and to Tommy Ward for the grand supper.

FILM

“MURDER at the GALLOP”

This adaptation of an Agatha Christie mystery features one of her most popular creations, “Miss Marple”. She’s played marvellously – if rather against type - by the redoubtable Margaret Ruther-
ford, aided by her real-life husband Stringer Davis, as they investigate a series of murders in
an English village. There are surprises and thrills a-plenty, and fine supporting performances
from well-known actors Robert Morley, Charles Tingwell and Flora Robson. Once again the excellent supper was provided by Eileen Murphy, complete with Tommy’s tea. Paddy Kelly was again the projectionist. Thanks to them, and to all who came, we had another memorable night.
