REVIEW OF RECENT EVENTS

BIRTHDAY DINNER-DANCE

The ABC Club’s 46th Annual Birthday Dinner-Dance was held on Saturday October 22nd in Maples House Hotel, Glasnevin. We started with a sumptuous 4-course meal, consisting of vegetable soup or vol-au-vents, followed by a choice of 3 main courses, beef, hake or turkey and ham, with a selection of vegetables. As dessert we could have profiteroles or apple crumble and cream, accompanied by tea or coffee, with a slice of the beautiful birthday cake, baked and iced by Cait Clynch.

Pat O’Neill’s Band provided the music and we all danced the night away. Some of the Club’s star singers treated us to lovely songs. Raffle tickets were on sale too, hope you won something or one of several Spot Prizes. Everyone had an enjoyable night and went home well-fed, and maybe with a prize too. If you were there, thank you; if you weren’t, come next year and enjoy the fun.

FILM “RIVER OF NO RETURN”

This was an exciting Western film, directed by Otto Preminger, set among stunning scenery. Robert Mitchum starred as a farmer with a troubled past. In the tempestuous times when the action takes place, with Indians on the warpath and desperate situations abounding, there are many adventures and some surprises, and the outcome is never predictable.

Marilyn Monroe appears as a singer in a saloon, and for a little while we see her glamorous persona. All too soon the problems begin, and everything is changed. There are several “white knuckle” moments, and the scenes on the river of the title were magnificent. The background music enhanced, particularly the title song. The film was very well received by all present.

Once again our thanks are due to our projectionist Paddy Kelly, and to Eileen Murphy who served
another delicious supper, complete with Tommy’s refreshing tea.
