REVIEW OF RECENT EVENTS

FILM NIGHT
 “MY FAVOURITE WIFE”

A wife who was declared “missing, presumed dead” after a shipwreck arrives home on the day her husband has remarried. She’s mischievous as well as lovely - Irene Dunne, ideally cast; he’s played by Cary Grant, so we can expect all sorts of comic complications. And we’re not disappointed. It’s amazing how many amusing situations arise that could surely have been clarified “in two seconds”,as the wife later points out, but that would have deprived us of a most inventive and entertaining collection of events in a film from an era noted for terrific comedies. Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick impressed in their supporting roles. We thank Paddy Kelly, our projectionist, and Eileen Murphy who once again provided an excellent supper.

BOOK NIGHT

Our second occasion when members were invited to read excerpts from a favourite book for others to enjoy, again proved very pleasant and varied. Some people preferred to listen than to read. Francis Lawlor favoured us with extracts from “The Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame, bringing back memories of childhood, as did Aoife Malone with another such classic, Johanna Spyri’s Alpine-set “Heidi”. Patsy Collins contrasted with interesting observations from Dr John Temple’s “Help, I’m Drowning in Debt”. Paddy Kelly, who also organised the night, enlightened us with an account of French composer Francois Couperin; Cait Clinch contributed a (non-sung) version of Christy Moore’s “Lisdoonvarna”, focusing our attention on
the lyrics. Eileen Murphy treated us to a poem by Dublin author Pat Ingoldsby. Teresa Talbot’s First Communion piece by John D. Sheridan inspired and amused. Another highlight was Teresa O’Hehir’s thought provoking and moving “The Bridge”. A brief discussion followed each item. A nice supper complete with Tommy’s tea concluded our night. We thank all who made it so entertaining.
