Our first Holy Mass in our new home was celebrated on Ash Wednesday by Fr Declan Blake. The venue was ideal for the occasion, and as in our previous Masses, the altar was suitably prepared. Fr Blake was warmly welcomed by all present. Paddy Kelly did the readings with his customary clarity and care. Appropriate hymns were sung by a choir of Club members, led by organist Teresa Talbot. Fr Blake’s homily was appreciated by all. He joined us for Tommy Ward’s refreshing cup of tea and a pleasant chat. We are very fortunate to have him, and to have such a nice central location. Our thanks to him and to all who came and made the Mass a fine commencement of the Lenten Season.
VALENTINE PARTY
We had a fitting celebration of St Valentine’s Day - admittedly a night early, but who cared? The music of DJ Paddy Kelly was just right for the relaxed kind of dancing that suited us, with familiar songs and nice singers. Cait’s cuisine delighted us, topped off with Tommy’s tea, enhanced by the glass of wine or orange. Ticket- seller par excellence Teresa O’Hehir obliged for the raffle, and we congratulated the lucky prize- winners. We thank all who attended and all who made the night so enjoyable.

FILM NIGHT: “JANE EYRE”
Many of us are familiar with Charlotte Bronte’s most famous novel and the story of the young orphaned Jane, sent to the harsh institution of Lowood by her cruel aunt. When she grows up, she becomes governess to Mr Rochester, the wealthy owner of Thornfield Manor. It’s a strange mansion, and she finds the owner strange and, at times, intimidating, but romance can blossom even in unlikely situations. It’s not all plain sailing; there are many peculiar happenings in this daunting milieu. The starry cast was led by Joan Fontaine in the title role; Orson Welles – who acted in Dublin’s Gate Theatre in his youth – was impressive as the brooding “Lord of the Manor”; other featured actors included “our own” Sarah Allgood, a very young Elizabeth Taylor, Margaret O’Brien and Peggy Ann Garner. The black and white photography emphasised the turbulent setting of the Yorkshire Moors. Again we thank Paddy Kelly, our projectionist, and Eileen Murphy who supplied the tasty supper, not forgetting Tommy’s tea.

JANUARY SALE
The annual January Sale was organised again by our hard-working team of Patsy Collins and Dolores Dempsey. They provided a fine collection of goods to choose from, a raffle for lovely prizes, and a tasty supper as well. Another grand night out, all to help our Club. Many thanks, Dolores, Patsy and Tommy, and everyone who attended and helped out.
