REVIEW OF RECENT EVENTS

CLUB BREAK AUG l5-l7

It was so short, yet sweet, filled with lovely

sights and meeting so nice people; our week-end

away in Cork city. We caught the 2pm train from

Heuston Station, and between chatting with each

other and with Ernest from Derry and viewing the

ever-changing landscape, it was a very enjoyable

and comfortable trip. We checked into Ashley

Hotel, Coburg Street, a charming old hotel that

suited us. Later we went for a ramble, a bite to

eat and a good night’s sleep. On Saturday llam

Latin Mass was followed by some window-shopping

with a few purchases, and a visit to the English

Market on St Patrick’s Parade. Local delicacies

drisheen and tripe were on view, the place is a

hive of activity. After a fine lunch in a nearby

restaurant, we headed for St Fin Barre’s Cathedral

and marvelled at the wonderful structure and the

ancient statues of the Apostles. From her earlier

days Teresa knew of The Lough, we walked to it;

it looks like a large pond, with plenty of wild

life – swans, geese, birds and bats; we went right

around it, stopping for a delectable ice-cream in

the Hawthorn. We visited the local church too. On

the way back we went via South Mall where we had

a pictorial quiz of well-known Cork personalities

depicted on a monument there. Some of us went for

another stroll later that evening. An enormous

breakfast on Sunday was followed by another Latin

Mass, with appropriate reverence and music, then

a lovely lunch before heading for the train back.

Cork was lovely, but more so as a group.

FILM NIGHT – “THREE SMART GIRLS GROW UP”

Another popular film starring Deanna Durbin, the

lovely songstress of Hollywood musicals heyday, a

sequel to her first starring role, “Three Smart

Girls”, made a few years later; she tries to sort

out her older sisters’ romantic problems. There

were delightful songs between the complications of

the plot, well-acted by William Lundigan, Robert

Cummings and Helen Parrish; what a neat conclusion.

We thank projectionist Paddy Kelly, superb caterer

Eileen Murphy and Tommy Ward for the fine tea.
