REVIEW OF RECENT EVENTS

FILM NIGHT  “NO KIDDING”

A family decide the only way to retain their house is to turn it into a holiday home for children – with some unforeseen results. This comedy starred Leslie Phillips, Geraldine MacEwan and Joan Hickson
(both later played Agatha Christie’s “Miss Marple” in TV series) and several British character actors
in supporting roles. Our thanks are due to Patsy Collins, who provided the DVD, to Francis Lawlor,
our projectionist, and to Eileen Murphy and Tommy Ward for a most enjoyable supper.

BOOK NIGHT

A new item in the Club’s Calendar of Events, where members were invited to bring a much loved book to read from, this was a most pleasant evening, with varied readings and authors. Paddy Kelly led with excerpts from Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Patsy Collins chose Maeve Binchy’s “Full House”, Cait Clynch revived memories of “Poems We Learnt at School”, while Teresa Talbot contrasted Oscar Wilde’s moving “The Selfish Giant”, with Jerome K. Jerome’s amusing “Three Men in A Boat”.  Tommy served the fine supper. Thank you to all.

ANNUAL WEEKEND BREAK  - BRAY, CO. WICKLOW

Teresa (T), Mary (P) and Jim went early, I joined them after work and met our genial host Tony at our comfortable base, “Hill View”. Jim and I went for a walk and picked blackberries, and ate them
with tea during an enjoyable TV show; the others had supper at a seafront restaurant. We saw a beautiful sunset over Little Sugar Loaf, a lovely half-moon in a blue sky and later sparkling stars. Fortified with a good breakfast I went to work; the others explored Bray. David Spain and Niall Brooks joined us. After Vigil Mass we all went for a grand meal in Cassoni’s, the restaurant was put at our disposal. Back at “Hill View”, we had a great “sing-song”, plus Tony’s tasty night-cap.

On Sunday after Mass we lingered over coffee in McDonalds, voted the 5th trendiest in the world, and it did live up to that high standard. At “Sea Life” we saw wonderful things – colourful fish, China shell tortoises, sting ray and more they had fun with us, jumping up for close-ups galore – of us. The staff made all of us very happy. Niall generously provided lifts in his car when needed.

Thanks to Teresa who made the arrangements, and to all in the group for being in the right mindset for enjoying ourselves.
